-2nd Annual Fall Summit, October 28 - 30, 2004, Tree House Resort, Negril, Jamaica

?1.Farewell Lou Walker: We are saddened by the news that former NBCC Board Member and founder of the Georgia Black Chamber of Commerce, Lou Walker, has died from complications sustained in an automobile accident. A dynamic actor and active elected official Lou will be missed by all of us. Our sympathy and respect go to his wife and children.
2.Board Member Search Committee: The number of NBCC board seats has been increased to 21. We are actively seeking new board members from the entrepreneurial community. Business owners actively managing a business with over $10 million in annual sales and who can commit to physically participating in 3 board meetings per year should consider this opportunity. Resumes and business portfolios should be mailed to the attention of Harry C. Alford at the above address. Board members Sherrie Gilchrist, John Harmon and Jerry Mitchell will recommend the finalists to the board for vote.
3.Greatest Convention Ever: We sincerely appreciate all participants of our recent convention. The 12th was indeed the best! Speakers Charles Phillips, Oracle, Secretary Alphonso Jackson, HUD, Administrator Hector Barreto, SBA, and Lt. Governor Michael Steele, Maryland, were dynamic and inspiring. Record levels of Black business participation in the HUD and SBA programs can be attributed directly to strong leadership. The State of Maryland has laid the groundwork for new marks in minority business participation and Oracle promises to be a long-term partner with NBCC members. Now that the convention is done, it is time to proceed to the Prince George's Classic on September 18 (here).
4.NBCC/AFLAC Entrepreneur of the Year - National: Darnell Self, Team NuVision, Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. Mr. Self runs a team of over 75,000 consultants and has an annual training seminar of over 4,000 participants. They are providing a multi-million dollar mechanism that delivers a badly needed service to African American communities throughout this nation - ADEQUATE AND AFFORDABLE LEGAL SERVICE.
5.NBCC/AFLAC Entrepreneur of the Year - International: Nick Brown, Affinity Marketing and Caribbean Online. A native of Jamaica, Mr. Brown is providing affordable online services, including email, to the residents of the Caribbean. We predict Caribbean Online to become the number one provider of online services south of our border.
6. Lifetime Achievement Award: Fred Jordan, FE Jordan Associates, a prolific civil engineering firm working worldwide. Fred has managed a very dynamic full service civil engineering firm doing work in Vietnam, Africa, South America, over 30 states in the US and many other places. While doing all of this, he has been a very active community leader and a sincere philanthropist.
7.Parren J. Mitchell Award: Lt. Governor Michael Steele, State of Maryland, a champion for the development of minority business. This award is given out only when an elected official steps forward in the style of the great Parren J. Mitchell and does something very beneficial to the promotion of minority business. Lt. Governor Steele has done this at the beginning of his tenure in state government.
8.Chamber of the Year: Illinois Black Chamber of Commerce. This chapter is busy developing new chapters throughout the state of Illinois. It will have 25 new chapters under its umbrella by the end of 2004. It has won the respect of the Illinois Black Legislative Caucus and many corporate CEO's.
9.Innovator of the Year: The Prince George's County Black Chamber of Commerce (Maryland). This chapter will provide millions of dollars in fresh capital to its marketplace through the promotion of the Prince George's Classic. The football extravaganza will feature the great universities of Howard University and Alcorn State. This major undertaking took much coordination and excellent management by the staff and board of the PGCBCC.

Until next week,

Harry C. Alford
President/CEO

Fred Jordan
Chairman.
