ISRAELI DEFENSE FORCE (IDF) CHIEF OF STAFF MOSHE YAALON
WAS SPEAKING FOR THE IDF, WHEN HE WARNED
THAT SOMETHING MUST BE DONE TO GIVE HOPE TO THE PALESTINIANS,
IDF spokesmen and sources made clear on Oct. 30.

The criticism of Sharon's Palestinian policies
by Lt. Gen. Yaalon, until now a leading hawk,
in an interview with commentators
from Israel's three main dailies, is rocking Israel.

Ariel Sharon was reported to have told Defense Minister
Shaul Mofaz that Yaalon had to either retract his statements, or
resign. Yaalon did neither. Instead, IDF spokesmen issued
"clarifications" denying that Yaalon had criticized the
government, and then reiterated his essential point.

There is a debate over "how to continue to pressure
terrorists without alienating the civilian population.
He thinks we need to look at all the angles
when we come to discuss this question,"
stated spokeswoman Major Sharon Feingold.

Likewise,
her superior in the Spokesman Office, Brig.-Gen. Yaron, said,
that while "the IDF is subordinate to the political echelon,
obeying its instructions precisely," the articles in the press
"reflect deliberations in light of a complex reality. The dilemmas are real..."

Senior IDF officials, remaining anonymous, told Israeli
media (including Army radio), that Yaalon was correct to raise
the army's concern that the occupied territories are on the verge
of a far worse explosion than seen so far, unless something is
done to give the Palestinians some hope.

Ha'aretz commentator Aluf Benn wrote that "the army
is looking for a `strategic exit' from the territories.

Under pressure of the mounting snafus
(unnecessary killing of civilians in Gaza,
the six soldiers killed in Netzarim and Ein Yabrud),
Ya'alon is trying to kick responsibility upstairs
to the Defense Minister and sideways, to the Shin Bet,
before the chaos breaks out in the territories
and the politicians blame the failure in the war on the IDF."

Another wrote that the army is worried,
that after three years of fighting the intifada,
"the soldiers and their field officers are exhausted."

LABOR PARTY LEADER AMRAM MITZNA SUPPORTED GEN. YAALON.

"He was pointing to the fact that,
without any political prospects,
the Israeli army's operations in the territories
do not bring security," said Mitzna.

Foreign Minister Silvam Shalom also supported Yaalon,
according to a spokesman, but objected to the means used to make them public.

Shalom said that A notably defensive Deputy Prime
Minister Ehud Olmert told Israel Radio that if Gen. Yaalon
"reckons the situation in the territories is dangerous, he should
say so, but not in such resounding fashion."

He, however, said
"the chief of staff is very serious, responsible and reflective,"
and "it might be true that we could have been more generous with
Abu Mazen" (the previous Palestinian Prime Minister who resigned
when it became clear the Sharon government would make no concessions.)

SHARON WAS QUESTIONED FOR FIVE HOURS ON OCT. 30 BY THE
NATIONAL FRAUD SQUAD. The questioning was related to allegations
of bribery and money laundering, in the case of Likud-affiliated
businessman David Appel, who paid Sharon's son Gilad for
marketing a tourist resort he wanted to build on a Greek siland.
The money came in the form of financial support for Sharon's 1999
campaign for the Likud leadership.

Another round of interrogation is expected.
